Margaret Morgan & Wesley Phoa

Margaret Morgan is an artist. Wesley Phoa is a mathematician. Margaret was born and raised in Sydney; Wesley, born in Singapore and raised in Adelaide, South Australia.

She studied art at the University of New South Wales, the University of Sydney, the Whitney Independent Study Program, and UC Irvine. He attended the Australian National University and Trinity College, Cambridge, UK, earning a PhD in pure mathematics. Margaret’s life as an artist had been somewhat feral, living and working in Sydney, Paris, Berlin and New York, exhibiting widely albeit obscurely. Having moved to Southern California in 1992, she finally settled on home in Los Angeles. She drove a 1977 Camaro.

In 1995, when Margaret met Wesley, she encountered a young mathematician, living in Sydney, working in an investment bank. A pin-striped suit. They fell in love. They shared a love of art, from Mary Kelly to Marcel Duchamp; philosophy, mostly post-structuralist; politics; music. And even mathematics, though Margaret's knowledge of same is limited, to say the least. She had had a list of qualities she wanted in a mate.

Wes was nothing like what she imagined. She threw out the list and he moved to Los Angeles. Over three decades, they have built a life, a family with a daughter and two cats, a practice of living, a way of being in the world. Whether in their own intellectual and creative inquiries or in support of other art, music, education, mathematics, economics, and so on; they do so with love and pleasure and with the aim to leave the world a little better than they found it.
