The Videos William Pope.L
March 27 & March 28
at Now Instant Image Hall
Before his untimely death, William Pope.L was commissioned to make a new work for MONUMENTS. Though this never came to fruition, Pope.L’s 2012 film Reenactor engages with the Lost Cause leisure activity of battlefield re-enactments. In celebration of his life, The Brick is pleased to present two nights of Pope.L video works in partnership with Now Instant, in Chinatown. Now Instant is a cinema and bookstore in Chinatown, Los Angeles. Founded in 2018, Now Instant organizes public screenings, readings, performances, and events, with a focus on moving image work.
This program is presented in conjunction with MONUMENTS, an exhibition co-organized and co-presented by The Brick and The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles (MOCA).

“Reenactor is a film about how we costume and theatricalize time in order to make sense of our mortality. We dress reality up in history, documentary, biography, or art to restage and reorder the chaos of getting from one side of life to the other. Reenactor is a poor man’s parallel universe; it is my way of haunting time. I call Reenactor my Civil War film but the war I’m referring to is any great trauma that marks the land and its people such that ghosts are spawned and made restless.” - Pope.L
