In August 1974, Nancy Buchanan performed Rock 'n Roll Piece at the Gerard John Hayes Gallery in Westwood. Backed by the rock band Blue Cheer (once called "the loudest band in the world"), Buchanan--wearing a long blond wig, gold lamé top, white pants, platform heels, and false eyelashes--performed her song "Union Oil Company's Annual Report to Shareholders," its lyrics lifted from that very report. After the song, Buchanan held a raffle; each $5 "raffle ticket" was a numbered headshot of the artist in Rock Star drag. She drew four winners, who each won two shares of Union Oil stock, which the artist had inherited from a family member. She signed the stock certificates over to the winners using her own, freshly drawn blood.

On September 20, 2025, Slauson Malone 1 will perform a reinterpretation of Nancy Buchanan's Rock 'n' Roll Piece.

Truthfully, Nancy Buchanan: A Retrospective is curated by Laura Owens and Catherine Taft, with Hannah Burstein.
